🌿 Can You Apply Headshot Hair Colors Over Old Henna?
Namaste and howdy! 🙏🎨
Uh… what happened here? The office is covered in dust.
Dr. Headshot goes on vacation for two weeks and suddenly the little helpers think they can just slack off. Tsk tsk.
During her vacation, Dr. Headshot finally tried something that had been on her list forever: Henna 🌿
The result? Well… let’s just say:
the hair turned red,
the hands too,
the face as well,
and probably even the hotel room key.
But now it’s time for something new. Something more colorful 😏
And that brings us to the big question:

🎨 Can You Use Headshot Hair Colors Over Henna?
Short answer:
👉 Yes, technically you can.
BUT: There are some very important things you need to know first, otherwise the result can get pretty wild 😬
Henna behaves very differently from regular hair dye or bleach.
⚠️ Why Henna Is So Special
Henna doesn’t just sit on top of the hair.
The plant pigments bond very strongly with the hair structure 🌿
That creates several challenges:
other colors may apply unevenly
results can become patchy
shades may turn out completely different than expected
bleaching becomes extremely problematic
👉 Most importantly:
If your hair has been treated with henna, you should never just bleach over it casually.
Especially henna products containing metallic salts or unknown additives can react badly with bleach and cause:
severe hair damage
heat reactions
unexpected color disasters
or even hair breakage 😵💫
🚫 Going Lighter Usually Doesn’t Work
Henna often darkens the hair visually or leaves behind a strong warm undertone.
That means:
👉 With Headshot hair colors, you’ll usually only be able to:
stay within a similar shade range
or go darker
Very light shades such as:
pastel tones
light blues
yellow
silver/grey
usually won’t turn out as expected on henna-treated hair.
Especially difficult shades include:
👉 Banzai Blue, La La Lila or Pink’s Not Dead
👉 You can read more about this here:
“Avoid Bleaching – How to Dye Your Hair Gently & Creatively”
🧪 The Result Will Always Be an Experiment
Henna almost always leaves behind a warm red or orange undertone.
And that undertone directly affects the new color.
Examples:
blue can turn greenish or muddy
purple often becomes warmer or pinker
pastel shades can become patchy quickly
turquoise may shift unexpectedly
Darker shades usually work much better 👍
For example:
💧 Does Color Fade Faster on Henna?
That can actually happen.
Henna can make the hair surface smoother and less porous.
As a result, direct dyes like Headshot may:
not stick as well
fade faster
wash out unevenly
That doesn’t automatically mean the result looks bad, but the longevity may differ from what you’re used to.
✨ Strand Test = Absolutely Mandatory
Seriously.
No exceptions 😄
A strand test helps you see:
what the color will actually look like
whether patchiness appears
how strong the henna undertone still is
whether you even like the final shade
And most importantly:
👉 Always test new products for compatibility and sensitivity as well.
🌈 Which Colors Work Best?
On henna-treated hair, these usually work best:
darker reds
burgundy
dark green
dark purple
black
For example:
Very light or cool-toned colors are significantly more difficult.
🎪 So, What’s the Verdict?
Yes, you can use Headshot hair colors over henna 🌿🎨
But it will always be a little color adventure.
👉 If you enjoy experimenting and don’t mind possible color variations, you can create some really awesome results.
However, if you expect one very specific outcome, you should be careful, because henna loves doing its own thing 😄
That’s why Frau Dr. Headshot recommends:
👉 always do a strand test
👉 go darker rather than lighter
👉 and maybe don’t try it the night before your favorite festival 🎪✨
