Can you dilute hair color with water or conditioner? And is it actually a good idea?

I'd say: Nope... with a tiny hint of maybe.
Diluting Hair Color with Water 💧
If you mix hair color with water, it simply becomes more liquid. Depending on how much water you add, the color may appear slightly weaker because fewer pigments end up on the hair.
However, you are not creating more hair color. You're simply making the existing color thinner.
So, is water ever useful?
If your hair color feels a little too thick and you'd prefer a more fluid consistency for application, you can add a very small amount of water.
👉 Just keep these tips in mind:
Only add a tiny amount (for example, one teaspoon at a time).
Mix it in a separate bowl.
Only prepare as much as you'll use immediately.
Adding more water won't improve the result—too much can actually make the application less even.
Can You Mix Hair Color with Conditioner? 🧴
This is probably the most common DIY trick.
Many people mix their vibrant hair color with conditioner to:
create a lighter shade,
make the color last longer,
or achieve pastel tones.
Unfortunately, there's a downside.
Conditioner coats the hair with a conditioning film, making the surface smoother. As a result, the pigments often can't grip the hair as effectively. This frequently leads to a color that is:
patchier,
less vibrant,
and fades much faster.
If you want the longest-lasting result, we don't recommend mixing Headshot Hair Colors with conditioner. This also matches our general coloring advice: avoid using conditioning products before coloring so the pigments can adhere as well as possible.
